In 1803, Captain Nicolas Baudin led an historic French expedition to Kangaroo Island, landing his crew at Hog Bay beach, Penneshaw. One of Baudin's crew made a now famous inscription on a rock-face, which is today on display at the island's Gateway Visitor Information Center. Of course, there are still fresh landings every day in Hog Bay, with human cargo from the mainland ferry and little penguins returning to their burrows after a hard day's fishing. The cacophony of penguin calls throughout the town is quite extraordinary. Viewing of these delightful creatures takes place every night under ranger control.
