Joseph Sec was a master carpenter from Aix-en-Provence who lived during the 18th century. His monument is a cenotaph (a monument dedicated to an individual or group whose remains are located elsewhere) and was protected by the state as a monument historique in 1969. The low relief sculptures surrounding the mausoleum were probably designed and possibly executed by Barthélémy Chardigny, a professional artist of the time. The statues are representative of liberty, slavery, and the law.
