Java Island
Amsterdam, 1019
Constructed in 1995 and designed by 2 artists, this small islands is composed of 4 canals, 9 bridges, and narrow side-by-side rows of houses designed by 19 different architects. Each architect had to abide by strict building dimensions of 4.5 meters wide and 4-5 stories high. With pedestrian and cyclist traffic on the north and a shopping promenade on the south, Java Island utilizes its space to the max. Creatively compact, this site is a marvel of modern architectural design. Just be sure to watch your footing or you may find yourself unpleasantly wet, swimming through the canals.
