Sumbay is located behind the Misti volcano, 88km from Arequipa, via highway following the route toward Caylloma. The average altitude is 4,127 meters, and the scenery is typical of the tableland. The significance of Sumbay lies in its archaeological resources and in its caves, which exhibit valuable rupestrian paintings from the Palaeolithic Era. Located on the rock cove walls, these are naturalist and semi naturalist pictorial representations of humans, auquenidos, pumas and more. They are around 8000 years old.
