An hour’s drive from the city centre will take you to one of the most romantic archaeological sites of Greece. The Sanctuary of Amphiaraion is hidden in a gorge in the pine-clad mountains near Agii Apostoli. The sanctuary, which served as an oracle and a healing centre, consists of several private and public buildings dating back to the 6th century BC. Standing out for its splendid architectural features, is the beautiful theatre. A visit to Amphiaraion can be easily combined with a swim at the attractive Pebble Beach of Agii Apostoli or a visit of Marathon.
