The 11th-century complex - which is protected by a high wall - was built on the ruins of a 6th-century church. It is dedicated to the 'Presentation of the Virgin to the Temple'. A chapel dedicated to St. Anthony was added in the 16th century followed by a bell tower in the 19th century. Don’t miss the monastery's precious wall paintings dating back to the 17th century - these are all excellent examples of Greek religious art. Upkeep of the Aesthetic Forest of Kessariani is performed by the Philodassiki of Athens, a non-profit organization.
