During the 300 years of the Majapahit Empire in the 13th-16th centuries, Gelgel was the site of the Royal Court. Nowadays, apart from Pura Dasar's vast courtyards little evidence remains of its former glory. Although architecturally ordinary it is still of great significance. Even members of the royal family attend the spectacular festivals held here. Considered the lowland counterpart of the "mother temple" of Besakih, Mount Agung, Pura Dasar is a temple for ancestral worship and open to everyone irrespective of place in society. Temple anniversary celebrations include two major festivals, which occur on 5 March and 1 October annually.
