On November 30, 1966, on a very rainy night at the Garrison Savannah, the national flag of Barbados with its broken trident was raised, signalling our independence from Britain. Each year since then, a parade is held at the Garrison Savannah. Participating groups include the Defense Force, Police Force, Fire Officers, Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, Cadet Corps and Church Army. The Governor General presides over the festivities. Bring your umbrella because showers of blessing usually fall during the ceremony. The parade then marches into the capital, Bridgetown, and spectators line the streets to watch the fine display.
