A unique and popular destination, the oversized lion statue sits majestically on the hill with its upraised left front paw resting on a large red globe representing the world. The white lion was carved from the coral rock of the hillside in 1668 by Henry Wilkinson, a British captain of the Norfolk Regiment with the assistance of four military laborers. Captain Wilkinson was using the lion as a symbol for the imperial domination of the world by Great Britain, which by the time 1868 was at its peak. For those interested in the heritage sites on the island, the statue is certainly worth a visit.
