The Chinese name Qing Ming means 'clear and bright', but the festival is often referred to in the West as Tomb Sweeping Day. The date sees Chinese families cleaning and repairing their ancestors’ graves and making offerings there of flowers, food or paper money. This is done to remember and respect their forbearer, and to celebrate the continuation of the family lineage. Some believe it also placates the spirits of the dead. An interesting modern development is the use of online graveyards and cyber-offerings. As pressure on land means, most modern Chinese now use cremation instead of burial.
