Covering an area of more than two hectares (five acres), this is the country's second largest Confucian temple, smaller only than the one in Confucius' hometown of Qufu. Built in 1306, it consists of four courtyards and houses 198 stone tablets that bear the names of more than 50,000 scholars who passed the imperial exams in the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. A ceremony in honor of Confucius, China's great sage and philosopher, is held annually on September 28.
