The Wühlmäuse, founded over 40 years ago by a certain Dieter Hallervorden, has long been a quintessential part of Berlin's cabaret scene. Many famous cabaret artists and satirists have appeared here over the years, including Martin Buchholz, Thomas Freitag, Dieter Hildebrandt and Matthias Richling. In the true tradition of cabaret, most shows are not just comedy, but are a satiric commentary of past and present political themes. In March 2000 the Wühlmäuse moved into the building formerly known as Amerikahaus, a modernist 1920s construction now transformed into a cabaret theatre. The theatre contains over 500 seats and shows generally start at 8pm most evenings. Your German will need to be quite good if you want to understand the subtleties of the humour.
