The Astronomical Observatory, a singular octagonal building, was built using the plans of Fray Domingo de Petres, whose has also designed the Monasterio de la Iglesia (Monastery of the church) in Bogota and the Basilica of Chiquinquirá. The building was built in 1802 by Sabio José Celestino Mutis. Leading Creole scientists of the XIX century came together here to conduct research on space. The Observatory is situated opposite the Palace Echeverry.
