San Giovanni in Monte was rebuilt by the Lateran Canons, around 1286. Legend attributes the buildings origins to Saint Petronio (5th Century CE), the patron saint of Bologna. However, studies have revealed that it was first built in 1045. The façade has a trefoil pediment and was designed in 1474 by Bernardi following Venetian Renaissance models. The interior is in a Gothic style and is divided into three naves, which are supported by octagonal pillars. The windows, which were constructed at the end of the 15th Century, following Francesco del Cossa's design, are very beautiful. At the center of the middle nave, there is a marble column which stands on an upturned Corinthian capital, dating back to the 2nd to 1st Centuries BCE An engraved Christ figure was added to this and has been attributed to Alfonso Lombardi.
