As early as the 6th century BC a fortress existed at this location, but the walls and towers that remain today are Roman in origin. During that era, the ground level was 10 metres lower and the Nile was 440 metres closer, gently lapping the walls of the fort. It is interesting to see how the fortifications were incorporated by the Christian community. One tower forms the base of the Church of Saint George, another has been partially excavated, while the Hanging Church was built between two gate towers.
