What started as a large and peaceful demonstration by student leaders in Soweto on June 16, 1976, turned into the infamous Soweto Student Uprising when police attacked the students. Spontaneous rioting occurred throughout the country, and today it is symbolic of the struggle against the injustices of apartheid. This is a public holiday in Cape Town.
