Website | EmailBloemendal farm was bought in the late 1800s by the great-grandfather of the current owner, Jackie Coetzee, to farm sheep, cattle, a little wheat and sweet potatoes. His grandfather, Jannie van der Westhuizen, built the cellar in 1920, but it was his father, Koos Coetzee, who started planting significant amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in the early 1960s. As part of the Die Kloof estate, up the road from Altydgedacht, Bloemendal today boasts vineyards with varying aspects. Well known as a supplier of top quality grapes to the wine industry, it was a natural progression for Jackie to register Bloemendal as an estate.
