Website | EmailThe growth and development of Backsberg in the South African wine industry is quite remarkable, in that it was never a traditional wine farm. Purchased by Mr. Charles Back in 1916, the farm was extensively developed by his son, Sydney. By the 1960s, the vineyards were completely replanted to consist of mainly noble cultivars. Besides the outstanding wines, a unique feature of Backsberg is the production of an estate brandy. Sydney Back set about finding the best methods to produce an equivalent to the fine cognacs of France, yet with its own distinctive character. He was rewarded when his first release was awarded the Domecq Trophy at the International Wine and Spirit competition in London for, 'Best Brandy in the World'. Backsberg Estate believes that the making of fine wines is a holistic process, encompassing all stages from the growing of the young vine to the bottling of the finished product. Furthermore, wines should be priced to reach the tables of as many wine drinkers as possible so that all can share in the magic that is Backsberg.
