Website | EmailIn 1695 a piece of land between the Drakenstein Mountain and Olifantshoek, was awarded to Hans Hendrik Hattingh, who hailed from Spier in Germany. He named the farm La Motte after the hometown of his French neighbours. In 1709, the farm came into Huguenot hands when Pierre Joubert bought the farm from Hattingh. His grandson, Pierre, began the first serious viticulture on the farm and built the cellar and lovely manor house in 1752. Shortly before the turn of the century, La Motte became part of Rhodes Fruit Farms, and in the 1970s the farm was bought by Dr Anton Rupert, who restored the manor house. The estate is open to the public for wine tastings and sales in the very impressive tasting room.
