Website | EmailL'Ormarins is steeped in the old traditions of the French Huguenots. Its first owner was the industrious young Jean Roi who, by 1694, had planted over 4000 vines on the virgin slopes of the Groot Drakenstein Mountains. As a wine farm, L'Ormarins had the early distinction of producing South Africa's first champion brandy and first champion white wine. It was also one of the first South African wine estates to plant Sauvignon Blanc. The gracious homestead was restored in 1969, while the estate was completely redeveloped with new and noble varieties in the same year. Under Anthony Rupert, L'Ormarins is setting new standards in the production of wines of outstanding quality. Conducted tours take visitors to the modern wine cellar, the original restored wine cellar filled with casks imported from France and carved with the crests of the original Huguenot settlers, and a glorious collection of old copperware. The estate's wines can then be sampled in what must be one of the most impressive wine tasting rooms in the Winelands.
