Website | EmailPlaisir De Merle has a rich history dating back to 1678, when the Huguenot Charles Marais and his family left the hamlet of Le Plessis Marly in France and sailed to the Cape of Good Hope to begin a new life. In 1688, Governor Simon van der Stel settled the Marais family among other Huguenots, on farms in the mountainous splendor of the Berg River Valley, in the Drakenstein area. Charles Marais called his farm 'Le Plessis Marly' (which gradually changed to Plaisir De Merle) as a tribute to his birthplace. Plaisir De Merle was purchased by Stellenbosch Farmer's Winery from its most recent owners, the Gray family, and is today one of the largest wine farms in the Cape, covering 974 hectares. Plaisir De Merle's goal has always been the integration of vineyard practice and wine making, thereby producing wines of unsurpassed quality. This philosophy has now borne fruit with the introduction of an exclusive range of wines, designed to find favor with the most discerning palate.
