Website | EmailWhen steps towards a devolved Scottish Parliament began in 1997, a new building to house the Parliament had to be created. Controversial on many levels, the completed project was first estimated at a cost of GBP40 million at the beginning of construction in 1999 and ended up costing over GPB414 million when it finally opened in 2004. Its modern design and interesting shape are influenced by Scottish materials and is meant to blend in with the surrounding landscape. It is truly a marvel of modern architecture and has garnered many architectural awards. Access changes with the Parliamentary calendar but is free and open daily to the public.
