The name of the city stems from "Genua", a mythical city founded by the two-headed god Giano, protector of both ships and coins. The city itself has "two faces", since it "looks" dually inland and towards the sea. As an ancient settlement, Genoa prospered under Roman rule and during the Crusades. Currently, Genoa is a major commercial and industrial center that functions as Italy's most important port.
