In August, the seaside town of Agaete holds one of the most popular festivals of the Gran Canaria summer calendar. It is based on the tradition of prehistoric Canary Islanders, according to reports on the conquest of the island, of hitting the water with pine branches to beseech the Gods for rain. Thousands of people get together early in the morning in the foothills of the Pinar de Tamadaba, pick up their branches, and, accompanied by the Agaete Municipal Band, go down to the port, arriving at nightfall. This is a real display of colour and entertainment. For more information, you may phone the Town Hall at the above number.
