This building is famous for being one of the first lunatic asylums in Europe. The Catholic Monarchs commissioned Enrique Egas to build it soon after they conquered the city. Its one of the few civil buildings they commissioned; the others were mainly churches, monasteries and convents. Work began in 1504 and was completed in 1522. The sick, the mentally ill and pilgrims were cared for here. The Renaissance building has attractive Plateresque-style window surrounds. The pretty, arcaded inner courtyard and the fine coffered wooden Moorish-style ceilings are worth a look. This is now the university headquarters, with the Rectors office, the main library and administrative departments. Admission: free
