The Grand Bahama Islands celebrates its independence from England on July 10th beginning with a military parade and music. The Junkanoo Parade follows. With up to 5,000 participants dressing up in brightly colored, elaborate masks and costumes (many are works of art), this parade resembles Mardi Gras. Originally Junkanoo was held during Christmas when the slaves were freed for three days. The slaves took up their handmade instruments - cowbells, drums and whistles - and donned hand-painted masks to dance through the streets. The object is to make as much noise and have as much fun as possible.
