The July 10th Independence Day is the beginning of a month-long summer music festival on the island. Listen to Goombay, (Bantu for rhythm) with its rolling beat from the goatskin drum. Rake and Scrape bands play their Bahamian Quadrille and Heel Toe Polka dances with their handmade instruments made out of wash tubs, saws, barrels and sticks. Join the Junkanoo parade and while they play their bells, whistles and drums, dance the rushin' (two steps forward one step back) or the Jump-In-Dance (solo dancer performs in a circle of dancers). Hear Bahamian sacred music and contemporary African-American gospel. The festival has it all.
