WebsiteThis was the first place where slaves were emancipated under British Law, hence the name. Before the development of roads, Old Freetown was the center of Grand Bahama, and footpaths from here were the only routes to many of the settlements on the western part of the island. Today, all that remains of Old Freeport is the Hermitage (Grand Bahama's oldest building, constructed in 1901), the rubble of servant quarters, and a cemetery. Many guided tours highlight Old Freetown on their itineraries. Contact the tourism board for more information.
