Website | EmailGraz was known as a city of the old during the Donau monarchy. Youth has taken over since and has turned Graz into a student town, confronting the University with enormous problems of space since the 1960s. The former Lyceum, awarded University Status in 1827 by Emperor Franz I, was abandoned for the same reasons in 1895 and the Karl-Franzens University moved from the Bürgergasse to the University Quarter where it still is today, albeit on a much larger scale. A number of new centers and institutes have been founded since the 1960s, among them the modern "Resowi," designed by a famous duo of Graz architects.
