Journey into the Biedermeier period
Freiheitsplatz
Graz, Styria 8010
Nearest Train: Hauptplatz (1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
The Freiheitsplatz exists thanks to a generous gesture by the Styrian association of traders who donated the grounds previously occupied by houses in 1823. The fire that destroyed the Staendetheater (Standing Theatre) triggered this development. Under the patronage of Emperor Franz I who gave the square its original name, Franzplatz, a new theatre was built—the Schauspielhaus. All the old buildings were torn down to reveal the old square. Emperor Franz I is honored by a monument erected in 1824. The buildings surrounding the square all feature Biedermeier facades; one example is the Lambrechter Hof on the northern side.
