On the northern city limits, right where the Mur Valley opens up into the Graz, there's the Gösting Ruins—the remains of a castle built between the 11th and the 15th centuries. Thanks to its strategic position, the former proprietors could control all traffic into Graz. In 1925, the Castle Society was founded to attempt to prevent further destruction after years of neglect and fires during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today's Gösting Ruins, perching 200 meters over the Mur River, is a popular spot to admire Graz from afar.
