Originally, Minorite monks occupied this church's monastery, but they were forced to leave on request of Kaiser Maximilian I in favor of the Franciscans. It was in 1239 that the first documentary evidence appears mentioning the building, which was completed in 1277 and is thus among the oldest in Graz. The artist Franz Felfer created the modern glass windows.
