Horse-drawn carriages were the primary form of transportation on the island up to the mid-1940s. Today, this charming mode of transport is used mainly to take visitors on tours through the city of Hamilton. Terceira's drivers bring their steeds to Front Street near the cruise ship docks to offer guided tours that visit the many churches and the historic sites. Arrangements can be made for private evening rides at variable rates.
