Orford, situated on the Prosser River estuary, is 80 kilometres north-east of Hobart on the Tasman Highway. It was named after the Earl of Orford in Suffolk, England and began life as an early shore station in 1825 catering to the needs of the local garrison, whalers and the Maria Island convict settlement. At one time Orford was a busy port when the main transport was by sea. Today it is a holiday town with swimming, fishing, boating and scuba diving in the clear water among its activities.
