Early settlers discovered the fertile soil of New Town and built their cottages near the rivulet, which was the only source of fresh water. The settlers held picnic races for many years, and established a racecourse in 1831. Inns along New Town Road had curious names such as the Lame Horse, the Native Youth and the Grasshoppers' Inn. Augusta Road was originally a track to Sassafras Valley where Lady Franklin built her Greek style museum. The museum is worth a visit as is St John's Church designed by John Lee Archer and Runnymede House administered by the National Trust.
