WebsiteEstablished following a spate of shipwrecks in D'Entrecasteaux Channel, the lighthouse protected shipping en route from England and India in the dangerous waters and shallow reefs near the island. The lighthouse has watched over the south-western edge of the cape since 1838 and cost 2,500 pounds to build even though it was constructed using "free" convict labour. One of only a handful of lighthouses to have conducted tours, it makes a fascinating visit, with tales of shipwrecks and seafarers and the rugged life of a lighthouse keeper.
