Website | EmailBetween 1847 and 1854 a prison and probation centre was in operation on this site. The euphemism "Factory" was an attempt to give the impression of rehabilitation. In reality, women were imprisoned and treated in much the same way as the men of the time. The guided tour, which operates by arrangement only, takes the visitor spinning back to the past where women were not only incarcerated for crimes such as theft or murder, but also for destitution, depression and failure to conform.
