William Geeves and his family were the first settlers to arrive in the area from England in 1842. At that time the area was known as Lightwood Bottom. Today, Geeveston is the gateway to the Hartz Mountains National Park and the snow capped mountains, sometimes lasting throughout the year, are accessed by walking the many nature trails. Visitors can explore the natural rainforest by five nature walks signposted off the Arve Road. The Esperance Forest and Heritage Centre, in the former Town Hall, is a tourist information centre with many displays and products by local artists for sale.
