This picturesque coastline boasts an intriguing history that has been traced back thousands of years. Archaeological findings revealed the existence of civilization along the coastline from as early as 3000 B.C. More recently, it was the landing site of a 12,000-person Commonwealth force under General Samuel Auchmuty on 4 August 1811. The British succeeded in taking over Batavia from the Dutch two days after the attack. They ruled Batavia from 1811 to 1816.
