This seven-day autumn harvest festival marks the 40 years Israelites wandered in the desert after leaving Egypt. To commemorate this nomadic lifestyle, when they lived in makeshift huts, Jews build a succah, a temporary outdoor dwelling with a trellis-like roof that allows you to see the stars. The roof is decorated with foliage and fruit and families eat and even sleep in this dwelling. Shops, hotels and cafes often erect succahs outside on the pavement. Blessings are recited over four biblical species of plant, which include myrtle, willow, the etrog (a lemon-like fruit) and a palm branch. It is held at various venues throughout the city.
