Eid al Fitr
Feasting Marking the End of Ramadan Fasting
Throughout the city
Jerusalem,
This festival marks the end of Ramadan and the fasting season and the start of the Muslim month of Shaban. The festivities, celebrated by religious and non-religious alike, involve visiting friends and relatives, paying respects at the graves of the dead, eating lots of sweets and cake and wearing new clothes. The days before the festival are a very colorful time to visit the Old City markets as people shop for the festival ahead. At Al-Aqsa Mosque, the extra prayer of Eid is said before sunset. The streets of the Old City are full of children in bright, new clothes.
