Jerusalem
Yom Ha'Atzmaut
Independence day
Throughout the city
Jerusalem,
This celebration marks the anniversary of the declaration of the State of Israel in 1948. The festival starts as soon as Yom Hazikaron ends in the evening. The switch between the two festivals is marked by a candle-lighting ceremony, which is televised. There are fireworks, street parties and outdoor Israeli dancing. Do not expect an early night. Expect to be sprayed with shaving foam and silly string if you are in the downtown area (near Ben Yehuda and Jaffa Streets).
