This Orthodox Christian shrine commemorates the birth of Mary, the mother of Jesus. An ancient Christian legend says that Mary served in the nearby Temple as a child, and gives the names of her parents as Joachim and Anna. The crypt may well have been a cave-like home in the Second Temple era. It contains a Byzantine era mosaic floor and you can light a candle at the shrine. When returning to street level, be careful not to bump your head on the ancient stone wall! Phone ahead for the times of Greek Orthodox liturgies.
