Valley of Jehoshaphat, ancient cemetery
Behind Old City Walls (in direction of Mount of Olives)

From the Dung Gate, a broad new promenade circles around the walls of the Old City and overlooks this valley and cemetery. A staircase leads down into the valley and enables one to cross it to the base of the Mount of Olives as well. Here one sees the tombs of wealthy Jerusalemites of the Second Temple period. Although the Yad Avshalom monument recalls the rebellious son of King David, it is not known who was actually buried there. A nearby, simpler monument tells us that it is the tomb of the priestly Bnei Hezir family. Another tomb is known as that of the prophet Zechariah. In later periods, Christian monks lived in these monuments.
