Even with the availability of air travel, ferry and a second crossing, the Singapore-Johor Bahru Causeway operates as the most frequently-used medium for commuting between the two cities. Stretching 1,056 metres across the Johor Straits, this massive infrastructure was completed in 1924 after four years of intensive construction. A railway line and large water pipes run parallel to it. During World War II, the British Army demolished part of the structure to prevent the Japanese from invading Singapore. However, the Japanese soon rectified matters and the Causeway resumed its role as an important transport link.
