Chinese spice traders in the 19th century nicknamed this island ‘General's Hat Island’, thanks to the hill in the middle of it. Generally isolated except for a tiny fishing population, the island is surrounded by eight small islets. One of them, Berlima (meaning ‘five’), has a safe spot just for swimming and snorkeling. Expensive resorts are available, as are basic A-frame chalets. To get here, board the boat from the Mersing Jetty. The journey takes three hours. The return fare for adults and children are MYR30 and MYR8 respectively.
