This is a nine-day festival with the first three days being dedicated to the goddess Durga, (Lord Shiva's consort); the next three to Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and prosperity, (Lord Vishnu's consort); and the final three to Saraswati, goddess of speech, eloquence, music and literature (Lord Brahma's consort). Hindus make offerings to all supreme incarnations during the festival, changing the clothes on the images daily to match the different manifestations. A more festive celebration begins from the eighth day whereby music and dance performances are held in temples.
