Also known as the Festival of the Winter Solstice, this is the Chinese Thanksgiving Day that is celebrated six weeks before Chinese New Year. Ancestors are worshiped, either at home or in a temple, and offerings are made to them. A family reunion dinner is held where the principal food served is white or pink rice balls, which are symbols of family reunion; and, red-bean soup. Legend has it that the devil of pestilence; who came into being at the winter solstice; is afraid of red beans, and hence offering him the soup will keep illness at bay.
