Also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Mooncake Festival falls on the 15th day of the eighth moon of the Chinese Lunar calendar. The occasion celebrates the overthrow of the Mongols during the end of the Yuan Dynasty (1200-1341 AD) in China. Legend has it that a secret plot against the Mongolians was concealed inside mooncakes, which were distributed widely. The Mongols were defeated on the night of the festival. Today, this festival is celebrated with mooncakes and attractive lanterns hanging outside houses. Lantern-making competitions and lantern processions are sometimes held. Celebrations take place all day.
