This month-long festival, which falls in the seventh month of the Chinese lunar year, is observed by Taoists and Buddhists who believe that the gates of hell have opened to allow spirits to wander to the earth. To appease these spirits, devotees make sacrifices, burn paper money, throw sumptuous banquets and perform Chinese operas. The event is celebrated with religious ceremonies held in homes, temples, associations, and guilds.
